The SMASH sports club has been running since January 2000 and provides sporting activities with qualified coaches for adults with learning disabilities.
***Commencing from January 2015, SMASH will be reducing the minimum age for attendees down from 16 to 13 for those interested in attending the club thus making it a sports club all teenagers can try out if they wish. However, those with more complex disabilities will need to bring their own support to ensure they can receive the maximum benefit from the sessions***
They meet every Saturday afternoon between 3pm and 5pm at a variety of venues. The majority of the sessions take place at Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre (twice a month) where a wide variety of sports are on offer including football, short tennis and use of the fitness suite. The group also go swimming on the first Saturday of every month. The group then visit a number of other venues to maintain a varied and interesting programme of events such as archery, ten pin bowling, pitch and putt golf and fishing.
The club also has developed a very strong relationship with Southend United Football Club, who kindly provide the club with tickets to two of the team’s matches each season and to further strengthen this link, members of the club were present at Southend’s home game with Torquay on Saturday 29th March where they were presented with medals for sporting achievement on the pitch before the commencement of the game.
Each session costs £4 but this covers all sporting equipment and other supplies required to ensure members receive the full benefit of whichever sport or physical activity they are undertaking.
The club also hold an annual awards evening to celebrate the successes and achievements of all those who attend.
