Top Cats is a social club for people aged 14 years and above with both physical and learning disabilities that takes place at Cedar Hall School.
TopCats was set up in January 2004 after a request by the Local Action Group that there were no clubs/groups available for people with learning disabilities living on Canvey Island. Since that tme, the club has progressed from being solely for those on Canvey Island to now becoming a more accessible club for both physical and learning disabled people in Castle Point.
The club meets every Tuesday evening during school term time between 7.00pm and 10pm where a wide variety of activities are on offer. Members can play pool on the club’s own pool table or try their hand at air hockey. Arts and crafts activities are also available throughout the year as well as there being several parties during the year. However, cooking still remains the most popular activity and by being based at Cedar Hall School the club has full access to their very impressive and spacious kitchen area meaning that members can continue to cook a different meal each week.
The club has been funded by a number of Essex based funding organisations over the years including Essex Fairway Charitable Trust, The Boshier-Hinton Foundation and The Rosca Trust and we are eternally grateful to all of them for their support. However, to secure even greater security the club’s weekly fee was increased to £3 back in April 2012 and that is now allowing the club to complete it’s transition to a fully self sufficient activity meaning that there is no reliance on securing external funding for TopCats to continue.
